Plastic recycling in Israel
The danger of waste to the environment
One of the greatest threats of the modern consumer era to the nature around us is the industrial production of disposable packaging products made of plastic materials. Common applications include drinking bottles, consumer product and cosmetic packaging, disposable utensils, disposable bags, and more. These products do not biodegrade. Without treatment, they are buried in the ground and will remain there for millions of years. If plastic waste leaks into the environment, it pollutes the sea and the soil and poses a danger to animals and humans alike.
Israel is moving forward in waste collection and recycling
Significant steps have been taken in the field of waste collection and recycling in Israel recently. The Small Bottle Deposit Law has been working very successfully for several years. It is joined by the Large Bottle Deposit Law, which came into effect at the end of 2021. This ensures the flow of high-quality PET waste to be used as raw material in the recycling process.
The local recycling industry, led by Green PET Recycling, plays an important and fundamental role in promoting a circular economy and protecting the environment. By recycling waste for reuse, we can reduce the amount of waste that is landfilled or scattered in the environment, as well as save the Earth’s limited fossil (oil-based) resources.
Addressing the lack of recycled raw materials
Global directives set challenging targets for the use of recycled raw materials. Large corporations and well-known brands have set ambitious goals for incorporating high percentages of recycled material into their products. However, the supply of recycled raw materials on the market does not meet demand. Recycled raw materials are in short supply, especially those of good quality with food contact approval for packaging applications.
Green PET Recycling felt this need in Israel and decided to join in the welcome effort. Using advanced recycling processes, it recycles PET from bottle to bottle, thus transforming plastic bottle waste back into the product from which it was created. This polymer is the only one after mechanical recycling that has received food contact approval from the strictest regulatory bodies in the world, the American FDA and the European EFSA. Green PET Recycling also provides a solution for two additional recycling streams: HDPE, LLDPE. The products are available in various colors, from transparent, white, blue in various shades, as well as a mixture of colors intended for black products.
Taking responsibility for waste
The company was established as a partnership in which Yafora Tavori, a company specializing in the production of soft drinks, also participates. As such, the company consumes a large amount of plastic bottles of various sizes. With the help of the partnership in the recycling plant, the company will use recycled raw material in the production of the bottles and thus reduce the amount of plastic it consumes. This is a wonderful example of a company that takes corporate responsibility for its products, does not wait for regulation and works to reduce its carbon footprint and increase the use of recycled materials that support the existence of a true circular economy.
